ISO 14001

Implementaiton Status

Many companies are finding that when ISO 14001 is applied to forest management it provides a sound foundation for moving on to any of the other forestry-specific certification standards listed in the status report below.

The vast majority of forest certifications in Canada to date have been carried out using the ISO 14001 standard. Canadian companies tend to be interested in this standard for one or several of the following reasons:

  1. The company recognizes the operational benefits that can be achieved by instituting a system, and often times this recognition is further informed based on positive experiences with ISO 9000. ISO standards are internationally recognized and whether they be for quality management or environmental management they provide a wonderful foundation for continual improvement.
  2. The company has made a corporate-wide policy to implement ISO 14001 in their mills, and extending this commitment to all of their operations, including forestry just makes sense. In effect, implementing ISO 14001 corporate-wide standardizes corporate policy, strategic decision-making, communications, employee training, environmental reporting, auditing procedures and other important environmental elements essential to the management of a modern, efficient corporation that wants to improve environmental performance.
  3. The company believes that instituting a strong environmental management system standard, like ISO 14001, will provide the right foundation to move on to some of the forestry-specific certification standards available in Canada today. In fact, all certifications to the CSA and SFI standards to date in Canada (October 2001) were done on forest areas which were already covered off by an ISO 14001 certification.
