Intentions

In January 2002, the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) announced that its members would pursue 3rd party independent certification to a forestry specific standard (CSA, SFI, FSC) by the end of 2006 on lands under their management. This commitment called for a new certification intentions survey to determine how this commitment has changed industry intentions.

The December 2002 survey revealed that at the time Canadian companies had certified:

  • 14.4 million hectares to CSA
  • 12.7 million hectares to SFI
  • 1.0 million hectares to FSC

The December 2002 survey also revealed that Canadian companies felt that certification achievements would change radically by the end of 2006 and they would certify:

  • 71.7 million hectares to CSA
  • 37.7 million hectares to SFI
  • 26.8 million hectares to FSC

Progress towards meeting these intentions has been considerable. As of December 2005, which is just 3 years following the intentions survey, and with one year left until December 2006, Canadian companies have already certified:

  • 69.2 million hectares to CSA
  • 37.6 million hectares to SFI
  • 15.2 million hectares to FSC

FPAC members account for 80% of the December 2005 certifications in Canada, and FPAC members have already achieved 95% of their January 2002 commitment to have all lands under their members' management certified by December 2006. (New members and new acquisitions have 5 years to certify.).
