
The issue of sustainable forest management (SFM) is considered to be of such importance by the Canadian forest industry that, in 1993, a group of 22 organizations representing virtually all of the industry came together to form the Canadian Sustainable Forestry Certification Coalition. It was the first time in the industry's history that a single issue led to such a concerted effort.
In 1994, the Coalition turned to the Canadian Standards Association with a request for CSA to establish a multi-interest technical committee to develop a SFM standard for Canada. In October 1996, the CSA SFM Standard (Z808/Z809), was published as a National Standard of Canada.
Since 1996, the Coalition has focused its attention on three main objectives:
